Many creative geniuses become so good at what they do that they look back at all they have achieved in the past and consider it substandard. Thus challenging their self to do better. Yet when you ask someone else to look at their previous work they are literally blown away by their brilliance, artistic abilities and talents.
It is an interesting fact that if you ask an Opera Singer, Dancer, Ice Skater, Actress or Painter; Wasn’t that performance or painting perfect? They will immediately give critique and say it was not, it was flawed but they can do better. Thus the old saying; “Beauty is in the Eyes of the Beholder” makes a lot of sense. It is what you believe it is and this is your perception, no matter what anyone else thinks. The artist thinks it is flawed and the buyer of the art or performance only sees perfection.
Most creative artists who write poetry believe that their older work is immature or someone not good enough to display. Yet to others who view it, they love it and wish to frame it? Well actually since the process is what we should be looking at, then of course the old stuff and the new stuff, would be smart to keep together. The process of refinement and perfection is the key and that will need road markers along the way.
The contrast between youthful energy of a young woman who writes poetry and an adult level poetry in later years is of value. Because the creative mind should never lose the child's mind and should be able to straddle both worlds. It is this ability to cling to the youthfulness and later woman hood that will make the difference. When studying the creative genius of the greatest human artists we need to concentrate on tracking the works throughout their Human Life Cycle. I hope this article will propel thought in 2007.
